Graveyard Shift is a horror superhero series that asks a delicious question: what if the Universal Monsters were the X-Men? Co-created by Mark Poulton and Jon Malin—two veterans who’ve worked at Marvel, DC, and Image—the series follows scientists and security personnel working for the mysterious Atlantis Corporation who are betrayed and murdered by their employers. Thrown into their own experiments, they’re reborn with terrifying new abilities: Professor Blood, the Monster, the Bride, Monster Girl, Sea Urchin, and Ghost in the Machine. Now framed as terrorists, these dead heroes must battle supernatural evil while uncovering the dark truth behind their resurrection.
The first volume launched on Indiegogo in 2018 and raised an astonishing $106,096 from nearly 2,000 backers, funding in just hours. The series has only grown in ambition since then—Volume III raised an incredible $265,383 from 2,537 backers, and each subsequent volume has continued to expand the mythos. Volume IV introduced the Black Emperor storyline, a three-part epic pitting the team against an alien empire, while Volume V wrapped up the first major arc. Each volume runs roughly 50-68 pages, with supplemental stories and bonus content included.
What makes Graveyard Shift special is its love for classic monster cinema filtered through modern superhero storytelling. The team operates from Castle Dracula—a flying headquarters that would make any X-Man jealous—battling werewolves, dimension-hopping threats, and the ever-present Van Helsing and his Crimson Guard. The series balances horror with genuine heart, giving readers characters they can root for even as they’re terrifying.
Perfect for fans of classic monster movies, ’90s Image Comics, and supernatural superhero stories like Justice League Dark or Shade, the Changing Man.
