FCBD 2019: Our Favorite Thing Is My Favorite Thing Is Monsters

Released for Free Comic Book Day on May 4, 2019, Our Favorite Thing Is My Favorite Thing Is Monsters is a 32-page one-shot that packs three distinct works from Emil Ferris into a single book. The centerpiece is a 16-page new chapter in the story of Karen Reyes — picking up where My Favorite Thing Is Monsters Book One left off — written and drawn exclusively for FCBD readers.

The issue also includes The Bite That Changed My Life, a six-page autobiographical comic in which Ferris recounts contracting West Nile virus, the paralysis that followed, and the long road back to drawing. Rounding out the collection is How to Draw a Monster, a five-page instructional strip that lets Ferris share her creative process with characteristic warmth and wit.

Published by Fantagraphics, the one-shot won the 2020 Eisner Award for Best Single Issue/One-Shot, adding to Ferris’s growing shelf of industry honors. It features a cover painted in Ferris’s signature ballpoint-pen style, depicting Karen Reyes in her iconic werewolf form.
