Prokaryote Season is a 265-page sci-fi exploration of queerness, desire, and societal structures rendered through Leo Fox’s signature surrealist visual language. Originally self-published in 2021, the graphic novel was republished by Silver Sprocket in 2023, bringing Fox’s sprawling, symbolically rich world to a wider audience. The work features his recurring character Starman (who would later appear in Boy Island) alongside a cast of bizarre, erotic, and politically charged figures navigating a world that is equal parts alien and uncomfortably familiar.
Fox’s art throughout is densely detailed, with imagery that shifts between the viscerally organic and the sharply satirical. The body politic—literally rendered through cellular and biological metaphors—serves as both setting and subject. “Prokaryote Season” functions as both sci-fi premise and bodily metaphor: the microscopic, the prokaryotic, the unseen machinery of desire and selfhood operating beneath the surface of social interaction.
