Serial

Zoe, the demon-possessed child from Rachel Rising, breaks free and hunts the darkness inside her in Terry Moore's dark 10-issue revenge thriller.

📖 Abstract Studio • Started 2021

Terry Moore took a long look at the darkest corner of the Terryverse and built a whole series there. Serial follows Zoe — the little girl who spent most of Rachel Rising possessed by the demon Malus — now freed from the demon and on a quest for revenge. The demon kept her young and turned her into a serial killer, and the person hunting that killer is the killer herself. It’s a grim, elegant psychological horror-thriller that recontextualizes one of modern comics’ most haunting child characters.

The series ran for 10 issues across 2021 and 2022, published monthly by Abstract Studio as part of the shared universe Moore has been building since Strangers in Paradise. The issues were collected into two volumes — Serial: The Glass Tomb (collecting the first five issues) and Serial: Cat & Mouse — followed by a complete omnibus edition. Moore has said the series was born out of the dark emotions of 2020, calling the Zoe stories surprisingly easy to write once he started.

Like Five Years, Serial keeps Moore’s trademark black-and-white art with tight, expressive close-ups, but trades the epic for the intimate — a single haunted protagonist picking her way through a world that keeps asking who the real monster is. If you came to Rachel Rising for its dread and its defiant female leads, Serial is the closing chapter of that story.
