Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess' Stardust

Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess' Stardust: a luminous quest into Faerie where a fallen star becomes a woman, witches race the woods, and lightning pirates sail the sky. A fantasy illustrated classic.

📖 DC Comics / Vertigo • Started 1997

Stardust is one of the most beloved fantasy collaborations of the 1990s — a luminous illustrated novel born from the partnership of Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess. Beyond the old stone wall that gives the English village of Wall its name lies the realm of Faerie, where stars fall from the sky as glowing maidens, witches race through the forest in gnome-drawn carriages, and lightning pirates sail the sky in search of plunder. When young Tristran Thorn rashly vows to retrieve a fallen star for the woman he loves, he crosses that wall and discovers a world far stranger and more dangerous than anything he imagined.

The Collaboration

Gaiman wrote and Vess painted simultaneously, each influencing the other in real time. The result is a stunning work with over 175 of Vess’s full-color paintings, originally serialized as four prestige-format comics from DC’s Vertigo imprint in 1997. It won the Mythopoeic Award for Best Adult Literature and earned Vess the 1999 World Fantasy Award for Best Artist, and was adapted into a major motion picture starring Charlie Cox, Claire Danes, and Michelle Pfeiffer in 2007.

The World of the Story

The story unfolds like a lost Victorian fairy tale refracted through a modern lens — part quest romance, part picaresque adventure, shot through with Gaiman’s signature wit and Vess’s breathtaking visuals. From the glittering star herself (named Yvaine, proud and furious at being knocked out of the sky) to the ancient witch-queens who want to eat her heart for immortality, every character is rendered with the kind of loving detail that rewards repeat readings.

The Definitive Edition

This definitive edition collects all four original issues plus a treasure trove of Vess’s sketches and preliminary art. It remains one of the most beautiful fantasy books ever published — a genuine meeting of two artists at the height of their powers.

Perfect for fans of The Books of Earthsea, Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, and the fairy tale traditions of Lord Dunsany and Hope Mirrlees.
