Sunflowers

An autobiographical comic about living with bipolar I disorder — rendered in warm retro colors, nostalgia, and subtle horror.

📖 Silver Sprocket • Started 2024

Sunflowers is Keezy Young’s autobiographical short comic about living with bipolar I disorder — 24 full-color pages that move from mania to depression to the fragile balancing act of everyday life. Young uses sunflowers as a recurring visual motif (a nod to Van Gogh, who also lived with bipolar disorder), alongside retro pop culture references to the Mamas and the Papas, the Monkees, and the golden-hued glow of 1970s nostalgia. The result is a comic that feels like a discovered photograph album — warm, yearning, and achingly honest.

Published by Silver Sprocket in 2024, Sunflowers earned nominations for the 2025 Eisner Award (Best Single Issue/One-Shot) and the 2025 Ignatz Award (Outstanding Comic), and won the 2025 Graphic Medicine Award for Best Short Form Comic. Chloe Horning praised Young’s “commitment to depicting both the good and bad of their disorder, while taking care not to romanticize those aspects that may seem appealing.” Andy Oliver of Broken Frontier called it “undoubtedly one of the finest comics to have come out from Silver Sprocket to date.”

Best read in a single sitting — and best shared with someone who needs to feel less alone.

Perfect for fans of Allie Brosh’s Hyperbole and a Half, Tillie Walden’s Spinning, and Katie Green’s Lighter Than My Shadow — graphic memoirs about mental health that are as beautiful as they are brave.
