Taproot
A queer supernatural romance about a young gardener who can see ghosts — and the charming specter who has been haunting him for years.
📖 Oni Press • Started 2017
Taproot is a gentle, aching queer love story about a young gardener named Hamal who can see and talk to ghosts — including one charming specter in particular who has been quietly in love with him from beyond the veil. Originally published by Roar (an imprint of Lion Forge Comics, now Oni Press-Lion Forge) in 2017 and re-released in 2022, Keezy Young’s debut graphic novel blends supernatural longing with the tender, sun-dappled atmosphere of a garden in bloom.
With its warm color palette, soft linework, and understated emotional storytelling, Taproot became a word-of-mouth sensation in the LGBTQ+ comics community. It established the themes Young would continue to explore in their later work: queer love, the boundary between life and death, and the beautiful ache of caring for someone beyond reason. A full-length sequel is in development.
Perfect for fans of ND Stevenson’s Nimona, Tillie Walden’s On a Sunbeam, and the gentle supernatural romance of The Tea Dragon Society — queer comics that wear their hearts on every page.
