The Whimsical Wiz is a weekly newspaper-style comic strip chronicling the magical misadventures of a delightfully bumbling wizard. Created by Michael Grassia—the same cartoon mind behind Plunger Pup—the strip ran on Instagram in two seasons: first from 2018 to 2019, then a triumphant return from January 2023 to January 2025.
With clean, expressive cartooning and quick-witted humor, The Whimsical Wiz recalls the golden age of newspaper comic strips while embracing the immediacy of social media. Each installment delivers a complete gag in just a few panels, with the wizard protagonist—powerful enough to cause real trouble but bumbling enough to make every spell an adventure—stumbling through a world where potions explode, spells backfire, and nothing is ever as simple as it seems.
After concluding the weekly strip in January 2025 to focus on new projects, Grassia made the series available through A Kid and A Comic, a newspaper curating family-friendly comic content for a new generation. The Wiz and supporting cast remain close to Grassia’s heart, and he has expressed hope of bringing the character back in some future form.
