Victory Folks is Don Simpson’s love letter to the Golden Age of comics—a 32-page super-team romp that brings public domain characters back to life with all the wit, energy, and idiosyncratic charm that only Simpson can deliver. Originally conceived as a round-robin jam for the YEET! Presents anthology, it became something altogether more personal: Simpson’s first self-published comic under his revived Fiasco Comics imprint in over two decades.
Origin and Creation
Simpson teamed up with veteran writers William Messner-Loebs and Jason Moore, with lettering by legendary X-Men letterer Tom Orzechowski, for the initial chapter in YEET! Presents #50 (2022). When co-creators drifted to other projects, Simpson took the reins, re-lettering and revising the first ten pages, scripting a second chapter, and drawing a twelve-page conclusion to complete the story. The result is a coherent, fast-paced superhero adventure that feels both authentically Golden Age and unmistakably Simpson.
The Concept
Victory Folks assembles a team of public domain Golden Age characters—the kinds of forgotten heroes that once filled newsstand spinner racks—and throws them into a classic super-team adventure. But true to form, Simpson makes them his own, injecting his signature blend of deadpan humor, surprisingly heartfelt character moments, and that distinctive crosshatched art style. The comic is a showcase for Simpson’s range: the same hand that draws the bulging absurdity of Megaton Man delivers a period-perfect homage to 1940s comics craftsmanship.
Perfect for fans of The Terrifics, Kurt Busiek’s Astro City, Alan Moore’s Tom Strong, and anyone who loves seeing vintage comic conventions filtered through a modern indie cartoonist’s sensibilities.
