Billy Tucci
Creator of Shi, award-winning independent comics pioneer
📍 Bayport, NY
Billy Tucci is one of the most celebrated independent comics creators of the modern era. Born in New York, Tucci founded Crusade Comics in Bayport, New York, with Shi debuting in March 1994 as the company’s flagship title.
At its heart, Shi follows Ana Ishikawa, a young woman of Japanese and American descent trained as a sohei warrior monk. The character struggles to reconcile her Japanese grandfather’s martial training with her American mother’s Christian teachings, creating a compelling duality that has resonated with readers worldwide. Shi means “death” in Japanese, and the character’s signature weapon is the naginata—a choice that perfectly embodies her warrior spirit. The series has been translated into five languages and sold over 3 million comic books worldwide, a remarkable achievement for an independent creator-owned property.
Perhaps Tucci’s most ambitious project was Shi: Senryaku, released in 1995, which brought together 36 different legendary comic artists—including Jim Lee, Frank Frazetta, Adam Hughes, and George Perez—to each interpret a story about Shi. The series was recently collected in a stunning 240-page oversized hardcover omnibus edition that showcases the incredible range of artistic talent Tucci assembled for this groundbreaking project. Shi also served as a launching pad for other major franchises, as Top Cow’s Witchblade and David W. Mack’s Kabuki both debuted in Shi before going on to their own successful titles.
Beyond his creator-owned work, Tucci has worked extensively for major publishers. At DC Comics, he contributed to Sgt. Rock: The Lost Battalion, a work that earned the Military Writers Society of America Gold Medal, as well as Jonah Hex, Birds of Prey, Flash Vs. Superman, and Harley Quinn. At Marvel, he worked on Heroes for Hire. Tucci has also delivered critically acclaimed creator-owned projects including A Child Is Born, which won the Christian Small Publisher Book of the Year award.
His recognition includes the prestigious Inkpot Award from San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, the Diamond Comics Gem Award, four Eisner Award nominations, and the Military Writers Society Gold Medal. He was also named Ambassador de la Region de Bruyeres, reflecting his international impact on the comics medium.
Tucci continues to produce new Shi content through crowdfunding campaigns, including Shi: Return of the Warrior, Shi: Haikyo, Zombie-sama, and definitive Shi omnibus editions. His campaigns have united backers from over fifty countries, with Crusade Comics’ exclusive crowdfunding campaign totals exceeding $1,000,000—a testament to the enduring appeal of his creation and his connection with fans worldwide.
