Colleen Doran is one of the most quietly influential cartoonists of her generation—a writer-artist who has spent four decades proving that comics can be as lushly painted as any oil canvas and as emotionally complex as any novel. A Distant Soil: A Self-Made Universe

Doran conceived A Distant Soil at the age of twelve, publishing it in fanzines as early as 1979 before it was contracted by WaRP Graphics in 1983. When WaRP attempted to claim ownership of the copyright and trademark on her work, Doran fought back—discarding 300 pages of art and rewriting and redrawing the entire saga from scratch. She self-published the series through her own Aria Press in 1991, and it has been published by Image Comics since 1996, selling more than 700,000 copies across multiple printings. The story of siblings Liana and Sera, caught between warring alien factions on a colonized world, grew into a 1,000-page space opera among the first of its kind in American comics. The Sandman Years and the Big Two

Doran’s delicate, emotionally expressive pencil work first reached a mass audience on Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, where she illustrated portions of the “Dream Country” and “A Game of You” story arcs—Gaiman even based the witch Thessaly on her. Her DC credits span The Legion of Superheroes, Teen Titans, Wonder Woman, Justice League 3001, and Lucifer; at Marvel she worked on Spider-Man, The Silver Surfer, X-Factor, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Clive Barker’s Nightbreed and Hellraiser. She later brought her watercolor mastery to covers for The Walking Dead, Conan the Barbarian, and Batman: Urban Legends.

The Definitive Adapter of Neil Gaiman

Her defining work came as an adapter of Gaiman’s prose. Troll Bridge (2016) became a New York Times bestseller. Snow, Glass, Apples (2019)—Gaiman’s chilling fairy-tale retelling told from the perspective of Snow White’s “evil” queen—swept awards season, winning the Eisner Award for Best Adaptation from Another Medium, the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a Graphic Novel, and the Ringo Award for Best Graphic Novel. The Comics Journal wrote that the book “solidifies her place as one of the greatest cartoonists of her generation.” She followed with Chivalry (2022), hand-painted in watercolor, ink, and 18K gold after studying medieval illuminated manuscripts, winning her a second Eisner and the Locus Award for Best Illustrated and Art Book.

The crown jewel is Good Omens: The Official (and Ineffable) Graphic Novel, her adaptation of the Terry Pratchett/Neil Gaiman novel, which raised roughly $3.1 million on Kickstarter—at the time the most successful comics crowdfunding campaign in history.

Beyond Gaiman

Doran has illustrated work by Alan Moore (Big Nemo), Warren Ellis (Orbiter, Finality), Joe R. Lansdale, Anne Rice (The Master of Rampling Gate), and J. Michael Straczynski, and painted the Irish multigenerational saga Gone to Amerikay with Derek McCulloch. Her most widely seen work may be Amazing Fantastic Incredible Stan Lee, the autobiographical graphic novel she illustrated for the Marvel legend, co-written by Lee and Peter David.

A Champion of Creator Rights

Doran has spent her career fighting for the people who make comics. She lobbied in Washington D.C. and served on the advocacy committee of the Graphic Artists Guild, contributed to the benefit anthology Comics for Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds, and shared her decades of hard-won experience through her Substack. Her work has been honored with solo exhibits at the Society of Illustrators and the Comic-Con Museum, she was nominated for the 2026 Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame, and she serves as Artist Guest of Honor at Worldcon 2026.
