Ethan Claunch draws worlds where mechs tower over skylines and monsters claw their way out of urban wreckage—then makes you care about the people caught in between. Growing up in small-town Montana, Claunch fell in love with comics through Spider-Man and Spawn before studying at the Northwest College of Art & Design in Poulsbo, Washington, where he graduated valedictorian in 2012. That formal foundation, combined with an instinct for kinetic, high-impact compositions, has made him one of indie comics’ most reliable engines for sci-fi spectacle.

His collaboration with writer Justin Zimmerman on The 27 Run: Crush—a mechs-vs-monsters epic published by A Wave Blue World—showcased his talent for choreographing colossal battles with genuine emotional stakes. The duo reunited for Ghosts in a Burning City, a 32-page sci-fi short described as “What if Akira Kurosawa wrote and directed Star Wars?” featuring a cover by Robbi Rodriguez and colors by Jeremy Colwell.

Claunch also contributed art to All We Ever Wanted: Stories of a Better World, the Ringo Award–nominated sci-fi anthology from A Wave Blue World. His clean linework and commanding sense of scale make him a natural fit for stories that weave human drama into larger-than-life spectacle, the kind of artist who can make a thirty-foot mech feel intimate.
