Lela Gwenn writes comics with the sharp tongue of a noir detective and the dark humor of someone who’s survived one too many bad days. Her work swings between horror, comedy, and social commentary, always anchored by protagonists who are equal parts vulnerable and fierce—the kind of characters who stumble into chaos and emerge battle-scarred but unbowed.
Gwenn’s breakout series, Bad Luck Chuck (Dark Horse Comics, 2019), is a four-issue slab of “slapstick noir” about Charlene “Chuck” Manchester, a woman who turns her catastrophic bad luck into a business model—selling disaster on demand. Co-created with artist Matthew Dow Smith, the series earned praise for its clever premise and Gwenn’s ability to balance absurdist comedy with genuine emotional stakes. As she told WWAC, Chuck is “the kind of tough that I fantasize about being, but probably wouldn’t like in real life.”
Before Bad Luck Chuck, Gwenn made her mark through anthologies: Where We Live (Image Comics), Hellraiser Bestiary #4 (BOOM!), and Born Dark, a Kickstarter-funded horror project that caught the attention of CGMagazine. She contributed to All We Ever Wanted: Stories of a Better World, the Ringo Award–nominated sci-fi anthology from A Wave Blue World, and later joined the Mad Cave Studios roster with Nightmare in Savannah.
Beyond comics, Gwenn is a contributor to Women Write About Comics and a vocal presence in indie comics communities. Her writing draws from influences as varied as Blacksad and Rube Goldberg machines, creating stories where everything is always on fire—but somehow, that’s the fun part.
