Paul Allor

Paul Allor writes comics that feel like they matter—stories where the explosions have consequences and the monsters have feelings. A writer, letterer, and educator based in Indianapolis, Allor has built a career that swings between massive licensed properties and intimate creator-owned work, often weaving threads of queerness, mental health, and radical empathy through both.

Their work on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for IDW is extensive and enduring: dozens of issues across TMNT: Universe, Mutanimals, Turtles in Time, Dimension X, The Armageddon Game, and more. Along the way, they co-created some of the franchise’s first queer characters—including Sally Pride and Man Ray—expanding the mutant world’s emotional palette far beyond shell-kicking action. Their G.I. Joe relaunch reimagined Cobra as a tech giant that conquered America through public seduction rather than military force, grounding the premise in questions of patriotism, sacrifice, and duty. Issue #7, “A Soldier’s Heart,” dealt directly with PTSD and veteran mental health; developed in consultation with the VA and the National Center on PTSD, it earned the SAVE National Media Award for Excellence in Reporting on Suicide and is now used by veterans’ mental health advocates across the country.

On the creator-owned side, Allor’s Hollow Heart (with artist Paul Tucker, Vault Comics) is a queer monster love story—a Frankenstein for the modern age—about a man trapped in a bio-suit and the mechanic who offers him escape. It won the 2022 Indiana Author Award in the genre category, notable because every other winner and nominee that year was a prose work rather than a comic. Their other creator-owned titles include Tet (also with Tucker), Monstro Mechanica (AfterShock Comics), Past the Last Mountain (Gov’t Comics/Comics Experience), and Strange Nation (Monkeybrain). They also publish the Pink Midnight Presents anthology series, featuring weird, slipstream one-shots developed with artist Juan Romera and editor Claire Napier. Their anthology credits include the hopeful sci-fi collection All We Ever Wanted: Stories of a Better World.

Allor’s work for Marvel spans The Uncanny Inhumans, X-Men Annual, Secret Empire: Brave New World, and the ongoing Marvel Rivals comics, which have grown from a promotional one-off into a sprawling universe of stories. They’ve also written for Samurai Jack, Kong of Skull Island, Godzilla Rivals, Power Rangers, Star Trek: Voyager, My Little Pony, and Clue, plus branded comics for LEGO, Marvel Hero Project, and others. Their branded work also includes projects for the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and the Indianapolis Colts—a breadth that speaks to their versatility across tone, audience, and medium.

A graduate of the Comics Experience program who now teaches there, Allor is an articulate advocate for empathy-driven storytelling. As they put it in a 2024 interview: “The non-negotiable [for aspiring writers] is luck, and something extra—either talent or persistence.” Their career proves both are in abundant supply.
