Trina Robbins
Pioneering cartoonist and first woman to draw Wonder Woman
Trina Robbins (1938-2024) was a groundbreaking American cartoonist, writer, and comics historian who helped pave the way for women in comics. Born Trina Perlson in New York City, she began her career in 1966, contributing comics to the underground newspaper The East Village Other. In 1970, she produced It Ain’t Me, Babe—the very first comic book entirely created by women—making history as the first all-woman comic book. In 1972, she co-founded Wimmen’s Comix, which became the longest-running all-woman comic anthology, running from 1972 to 1992.
She made further history as the first woman to draw Wonder Woman for DC Comics. Beyond mainstream superhero work, she wrote and drew comics ranging from Wonder Woman to Barbie, and authored multiple critically acclaimed books about women in comics, including The Brinkley Girls and Tarpe Mills and Miss Fury. Her all-ages graphic novel series Chicagoland Detective Agency was a Junior Library Guild Selection, while Lily Renee: Escape Artist won awards from the Moonbeam Children’s Books and Sydney Taylor Jewish Library Awards.
