What does it mean to be a hero when everything you protected has crumbled without you?

Adamant — the most unbreakable superhero on the internet, possibly anywhere — never expected his greatest villain’s final attack to work. But when Dr. Alpha’s temporal weapon tears Adamant from his present and deposits him in a nightmarish future, he discovers that a hero’s absence can be just as devastating as their failure.

The world Adamant knew is gone. In its place stands a dystopia where machines rule and the few surviving humans cower under the heel of King Adamant — an older, corrupted version of himself who rose to power in the hero’s absence. The villain who once tried to destroy humanity has become humanity’s forgotten savior… and the monster that replaced him is something far worse.

Mike Exner III’s love letter to the superhero comics of his childhood, Adamant is a series that wears its influences on its sleeve while carving its own identity. What begins as a straightforward “hero travels through time” story evolves into something more complex: a meditation on legacy, sacrifice, and whether the definitions of heroism can survive contact with an uncaring future.

The series features a rotating cast of artists — D.C. Stuelpner, Dann Franco, Fernando Pinto, Ian Waryanto, and KR Whalen — each bringing their own visual style to different chapters. Josh Jensen’s colors tie these disparate threads together with consistent atmosphere, while Micah Myers’s lettering ensures every word lands with impact. This collaborative approach gives Adamant a distinctive visual rhythm, with the story’s tonal shifts between action comedy and genuine pathos reflected in its varied artistic approaches.

Adamant started as a free webcomic, offering its complete story to readers without paywalls or catch-ups. The series evolved through platforms including Webtoons, Tapas, and ComicFury before finding its printed form through Loophole Comics. This accessible approach — giving the story away while also making print editions available for collectors — represents Exner’s belief that good stories deserve to reach readers wherever they happen to be.

Six issues collected the complete story, but Adamant’s world continues to expand. Mike Exner III has since taken his storytelling skills to Webtoon Originals, co-creating MoonRise and writing for the Skullgirls series, while maintaining his commitment to creator-owned work through Loophole Comics.

Perfect for fans of: time-displacement heroes like Cable and Booster Gold, silver-age aesthetics with modern sensibilities, indie superhero comics that balance action with genuine heart, and stories about perseverance in the face of impossible odds.
