Three Series of Hellfire

Stoner’s saga spans three series and nineteen issues across two publishers. The original Breed debuted in 1994 under Malibu Comics’ creator-friendly Bravura imprint, which Starlin had joined specifically to keep his characters his own. Its sequel, Breed II, followed the same year, and the story finally concluded in 2011 with the Image Comics miniseries Breed III: The Fall. Throughout, Starlin wrote, drew, inked, and colored every page himself — no guest artists, no editorial interference, just the full unexpurgated vision of a man who’s spent forty years mapping the outer limits of the Marvel cosmos.

The Complete Omnibus

The full saga was collected for the first time in 2025’s Jim Starlin’s Breed Omnibus, a 550-page hardcover from Monkey Wrench Press that crowdsourced on Zoop and is distributed by Dark Horse. It’s a rare chance to own the complete run of a cult classic that for thirty years was scattered across dead imprints.

Speaking to AIPT about the omnibus, Starlin reflected on why Breed means so much to him: “It’s my favorite of my creator-owned comics.” As the supervillainous Kingpin of cosmic comics completes one saga, his other great creator-owned epic — Dreadstar — charges forward, and Starlin’s official site is the place to keep up with both.
