📖 DC Comics • Started 1985

Conqueror of the Barren Earth is a four-issue limited series published by DC Comics in 1985. Set thousands of years in the future, Earth’s sun has become a red giant, laying waste to the planet it once warmed.

The Story

Long before the events of the series, most of mankind departed Earth for other worlds. They found new friends and a terrible new enemy: the warlike Qlov. The Confederation and the Qlov fought across the far reaches of the galaxy, until finally mankind was driven back to Earth—their original homeworld now a barren wasteland.

Desperate to reclaim their birthplace, the space-ark Renewal and the rest of the rag-tag fleet approached Earth, only to be viciously attacked by Qlov forces. Only one escape-pod from each of the five starships survived. One of these survivors was the female warrior Jinal Ne’ Comarr.

Light-years from her countrymen, Jinal leads the five other human survivors on a quest to become… the Conqueror of the Barren Earth!

Legacy

The Barren Earth features a strong female lead—Jinal Ne’ Comarr—making it ahead of its time in 1982. The series remains a cult favorite among 1980s DC science fiction comics, though it has never been collected or reprinted since its original run.

Perfect for fans of post-apocalyptic science fiction, strong female protagonists, and classic DC Comics fantasy/sci-fi from the Bronze Age.
