Co-creator of Amethyst and Blue Devil, legendary DC writer

Discover Gary Cohn’s legendary DC comics. Co-creator of Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld and Blue Devil since 1980. Born January 25, 1952, with a BA from Michigan State University and MA from Bowling Green State University, Cohn brought an academic’s depth to his storytelling. Together with his lifelong friend and writing partner Dan Mishkin, Cohn entered the comics industry in 1980—their first published work a three-page short story drawn by the legendary Steve Ditko.
Their partnership proved extraordinarily fruitful. In 1983, they created Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld with artist Ernie Colón. The series followed Amy Winston, an ordinary girl from our world who discovers she’s actually the princess of Gemworld—a magical realm where she must master her powers to save both worlds. The concept was pure fantasy adventure, and it resonated with readers immediately.
That same creative energy produced Blue Devil in 1984, illustrated by Paris Cullins (with Pablo Marcos). Daniel Cassidy was a stuntman who became trapped in his own superhero costume—a tongue-in-cheek premise that allowed Cohn and Mishkin to play with superhero conventions while creating genuinely exciting adventure stories. Blue Devil became one of DC’s most distinctive characters of the era.
Cohn’s career expanded to include work for virtually every major comics publisher. He wrote for Archie Comics, Crusade Comics, Marvel Comics, Mattel, and Renegade Press. He contributed to William Tucci’s acclaimed Shi series for Crusade Comics, including inter-company crossovers. With artist Ron Randall, he co-created the post-apocalyptic series The Barren Earth (also known as Conqueror of the Barren Earth).
Cohn has also written numerous DC titles including Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman, bringing his world-building sensibilities to mainstream superhero continuity. His approach to storytelling emphasizes character development and imaginative settings, whether crafting magical kingdoms or exploring the implications of superhero technology.
Beyond his own writing, Cohn has become an active voice in the comics community. He regularly appears at conventions in the Richmond, Virginia area, sharing his experiences and wisdom with emerging creators. His interviews offer fascinating insights into the creative process and the business of comics.
