The Fearscape is a world beyond our own, populated by manifestations of our worst fears. Once per generation, The Muse travels to Earth, discovers our greatest Storyteller, and takes them with her to the Fearscape to battle these fear-creatures on our behalf. All has been well for eons—until The Muse encounters Henry Henry.
That’s the setup for Fearscape, Vault Comics’ ambitious meta-fictional horror series written by Ryan O’Sullivan and illustrated by Andrea Mutti. The twist? Henry Henry isn’t a great storyteller—he’s a shameless plagiarist with delusions of literary grandeur, mistakenly identified by The Muse as humanity’s best hope against the terrors that lurk beyond our world.
The series is a brilliant examination of storytelling, creativity, and the nature of fear itself. Henry Henry is an unreliable narrator in the truest sense—a man whose ego far exceeds his talent, now tasked with saving humanity from literal nightmares using skills he doesn’t possess. His journey through the Fearscape becomes both a literal battle against fear-creatures and a metaphorical exploration of what it means to tell stories.
Andrea Mutti’s artwork brings the Fearscape to life with imaginative, unsettling visuals that capture both the grand scale of the fantasy elements and the intimate chaos of Henry Henry’s failing confidence. Vlad Popov’s colors add depth to the otherworldly setting, while Deron Bennett’s lettering gives voice to Henry Henry’s unreliable narration—a perfect marriage of form and content.
Fearscape drew comparisons to literary works like The Twilight Zone and Midnight in Paris, as well as comics that play with the medium’s conventions. It’s a smart, unique series that pushes the boundaries of what sequential storytelling can do.
Perfect for fans of meta-fiction, horror with literary sensibilities, and comics that use genre conventions to explore deeper themes about creativity and fear.
