Specter

A ghostly superhero struggles to be seen in a world that can't perceive him—and must choose between his power and his humanity.

There’s a special kind of loneliness that comes with being invisible—not metaphorically, but literally. For the young protagonist of Specter, this isn’t a hypothetical. It’s his reality. Possessing the supernatural ability to vanish from sight at will, he finds himself caught between two worlds: the tangible world he desperately wants to belong to, and the spectral existence his power keeps pulling him toward.

The series opens with Issue No. 0 releasing in October 2020 alongside its sister title Centurion, marking Backroom Comics’ bold entry into the indie superhero scene. Created by three high school friends united by a shared passion for storytelling, Specter emerged from late-night brainstorms and doodled character sketches into something that resonated with readers hungry for superhero tales with emotional depth.

What makes Specter compelling isn’t the action sequences—though there are plenty as our hero learns to navigate his abilities—but the internal struggle. Every time he disappears, he risks losing another piece of himself. Each moment of invisibility is a choice: stay hidden where it’s safe, or reappear into a world that may or may not accept him. It’s a meditation on visibility, identity, and the courage it takes to be truly seen.

Perfect for fans of introspective superhero stories like Ms. Marvel and The Misfits, Specter offers a fresh take on the genre by asking: what if your greatest power was also your greatest obstacle to connection?
