Chris Sebela
Two-time Eisner-nominated writer of creator-owned comics exploring identity, technology, and the fringes of society.
Born in Chicago, Chris Sebela is a two-time Eisner Award-nominated comic book writer whose work spans creator-owned indies to major superhero properties. After stints in Kansas City, he’s now based in Portland, Oregon, where he continues to craft stories that blend genre thrills with deeply personal explorations of identity.
Sebela’s breakout hit Shanghai Red (Image Comics) earned an Eisner nomination for its story of a disfigured woman reconnecting with her past through a vintage clothing shop. His crowdfunding-sensation Crowded (Image) took the gig economy to terrifying extremes, following an app that lets users pool money to murder the most annoying people in the world. High Crimes explored art crime and forgery, while Heartthrob mixed romance and espionage.
His work for Marvel and other publishers includes stints on Captain Marvel, Fantastic Four, Aliens vs. Predator, Escape from New York, and Kiss/Vampirella. Beyond comics, Sebela is known for chronicling his experiences staying at a famously haunted clown motel, exploring the intersection of horror and memoir.
Test, his sci-fi mystery published by Vault Comics, follows Aleph Null—a bodyhacker, human guinea pig, and corporate asset—searching for the mythical town of Laurelwood where the future is being sold before it exists. The series showcases Sebela’s talent for world-building and his ability to ground speculative fiction in emotional truth.
Perfect for fans of speculative fiction that questions identity and corporations, similar to Blade Runner and Westworld.
