Dan Mishkin

Comic book writer and co-creator of Amethyst and Blue Devil

Dan Mishkin has spent over three decades crafting stories that transport readers to magical realms and deliver superhero thrills with a wink. Together with his longtime collaborator Gary Cohn, Dan co-created two of DC Comics’ most beloved characters: Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld and Blue Devil. These aren’t just名义上的联合创作——they’re lasting legacies that have inspired generations of readers and continue to find new audiences through animation and modern reinterpretations.

Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld introduced the world to Amy Winston, an ordinary teenager who discovers she’s actually royalty in a fantastical dimension where magic is everything. Working with artist Ernie Colón, Dan and Gary built a universe full of wonder, adventure, and heart—a series that proved comics could be both exciting and emotionally resonant. The character proved so enduring that DC revived her multiple times, including a prominent role in the New 52 era and an appearance in the acclaimed Young Justice animated series.

Blue Devil took a different but equally entertaining approach. Daniel Cassidy, a Hollywood stuntman, gets literally trapped inside his own superhero costume—and the result is one of the most tongue-in-cheek, self-aware superhero titles of the 1980s. Working with artist Paris Cullins, Dan brought humor and humanity to a genre that sometimes takes itself too seriously. The character became a cult favorite, appearing across DC’s universe and eventually making the leap to animation.

Beyond his signature creations, Dan’s writing has appeared throughout the comic book landscape. He’s tackled Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman, and numerous other DC mainstays, brought his talents to Marvel, contributed to First Comics during the indie boom of the 1980s, and even explored the final frontier with Malibu Comics’ Star Trek: Deep Space Nine series. His versatility extends beyond superhero fare—he co-created The Warren Commission Report, a graphic investigation into the Kennedy assassination that demonstrated comics could tackle serious non-fiction subjects with depth and nuance.

Dan has also shown his commitment to the next generation of comic creators and readers. As a co-founder of the Kids Read Comics festival, he’s dedicated to nurturing young talent and spreading the joy of sequential art. This commitment to community reflects his belief that comics have the power to inspire, educate, and connect people of all ages.
