John Bivens

Award-winning comic artist and illustrator known for visceral horror, samurai epics, and creature features.

📍 Minneapolis, Minnesota

John Bivens doesn’t just draw comics—he weaponizes them. An award-winning artist whose work has appeared in the Eisner and Harvey Award-winning Comic Book Tattoo and the Harvey Award-winning Popgun volume 4, Bivens has built a reputation for visceral, unflinching artwork that thrives in the spaces between horror, action, and dark fantasy. Based in Minneapolis and a proud member of World Monster HQ—a creator-owned studio that includes talents like Zander Cannon and Peter Wartman—Bivens has spent years honing a style that’s equally adept at gore and storytelling.

Bivens’ artistic journey started early. Sending submission packets to Marvel by age 14, he later studied illustration at Northern Illinois University before earning his MFA at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, where Tom Kaczynski served as his mentor. He’s taught as an adjunct professor at Northern Illinois University and Dakota County Technical College, bringing his passion for sequential art to the next generation of creators. His client list reads like a who’s who of indie and mainstream publishers: Vault Comics, Image Comics, Valiant, IDW Publishing, Oni Press, and Heavy Metal Magazine.

His breakthrough creator-owned work came with The Devil’s Red Bride, a samurai grindhouse epic from Vault Comics written by Sebastian Girner. The series follows Ketsuko, daughter of the Aragami Clan, as she dons her father’s Red Devil mask to save her people and seek vengeance. Bivens’ digital artwork—rendered with the precision of traditional inks—brings a visceral authenticity to 16th-century Japan’s battlefields. The series has been praised for its unflinching depiction of violence balanced against genuine emotional stakes, with colorist Iris Monahan and letterer Jeff Powell completing the creative team.

Bivens’ range extends well beyond samurai epics. He’s the artist behind Creature Feature, a cannibal exploitation horror series from Vault Comics, and contributed to Spread at Image Comics—a body-horror series that pushed the boundaries of grotesque storytelling. His cover work has graced titles like Dark Engine and Bloodshot, while his illustration portfolio includes pieces inspired by The Witch, Biollante, and Hedorah—testament to his love of monster cinema and genre filmmaking.

A recipient of the Frank Frazetta Award for Excellence in Illustration, with nominations for both an Eagle Award and a Ghastly Award, Bivens continues to be one of the most distinctive voices in horror comics. Original art and commissions can be purchased through his representation at Comic Art House.

Perfect for fans of Sean Gordon Murphy, Jason Shawn Alexander, and anything from Image Comics’ horror line—Bivens’ work delivers the kind of unapologetic, detail-rich artwork that makes you wince and turn the page at the same time.
