Matt Bors
Two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist, Eisner Award-winning comics editor, and founder of The Nib. Now writes Toxic Avenger and Justice Warriors comics.
Matt Bors doesn’t just draw comics—he wields them like a precision instrument, carving through political absurdity with the kind of sharp-edged satire that leaves scars. A two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist and the first alt-weekly cartoonist ever to win the prestigious Herblock Prize, Bors has spent two decades proving that cartooning isn’t just funny business—it’s essential journalism.
Starting his career at just 23 as the youngest syndicated political cartoonist in the country (courtesy of Universal Features), Bors quickly became a staple in outlets like The Nation, The Guardian, The Village Voice, CNN, and The Intercept. His work landed him a Pulitzer nomination in 2012, followed by another in 2020, placing him in rare company among editorial cartoonists.
In 2013, Bors changed the game by founding The Nib, an online comics journalism platform that grew into a powerhouse of political satire and nonfiction comics. Over its decade-long run, The Nib published over 6,000 comics, three collected books, and 15 issues of an award-winning print magazine that earned an Eisner Award for Best Anthology. In 2017, Bors served as Executive Producer and head writer for two seasons of The Nib animated series on Topic, produced with Augenblick Studios.
After a decade at the helm of The Nib, Bors made a bold pivot into mainstream comics—bringing his satirical sensibilities with him, as he discussed in his 2024 PBS Comic Culture interview. His debut comic book series, Justice Warriors (co-created with artist Ben Clarkson and published by AHOY Comics), is a brutally funny dystopian satire set in Bubble City, a gated utopia floating above the nightmarish Uninhabited Zone. Justice Warriors has earned rave reviews from the likes of Peter Chung (Aeon Flux creator) and Bill Oakley (The Simpsons), with AIPT calling it “the type of comic that comes around once in a while and reminds you what the form can achieve.” A second collected volume, Justice Warriors: Vote Harder, landed in 2024.
But Bors’s biggest swing yet came in 2024 when he pitched a revival of The Toxic Avenger to Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman at San Diego Comic-Con—and walked away with the gig. Teamed with artist Fred Harper, Bors wrote a five-issue miniseries for AHOY Comics that reimagined Toxie for the 21st century: a teenager transformed by toxic waste into a grotesque, mop-wielding crusader fighting corporate corruption in Tromaville, New Jersey. The series was such a hit that AHOY expanded it into an ongoing series, Toxic Avenger Comics, plus a Toxic Crusaders spinoff, both debuting in 2025.
Bors also contributes to EC Comics (published by Oni Press), writing for the revival of the legendary horror anthology line, including EC Catacomb of Torment. He serves as comics editor for In These Times magazine, and in 2026 he launched a Kickstarter—That One Matt Bors Comic—collecting his viral “We Should Improve Society Somewhat” cartoon and other cultural satires into a single volume.
