Matt Miner writes comics that punch hard and hit deep. A queer writer and activist based in New York City, Miner has built a career on stories that refuse to play it safe — from the politically charged animal rights vigilantism of Liberator to the punk rock zombie mayhem of Toe Tag Riot. The Punk Rock Activist

Before comics, Matt Miner was already fighting causes that mattered. As VP of Zion’s Mission, a nonprofit animal rescue focused on pitbulls, senior dogs, and hospice cases, Miner channels the same punk rock ethos into saving lives. That same energy infused his breakout series Liberator from Black Mask Studios, where two young animal rights activists take direct action against animal abusers — a series inspired by real-world activism and Miner’s own experiences on the front lines.

The series resonated with readers who saw their own frustrations and passions reflected in its pages. “I wanted to tell stories about people who are fed up and decide to do something about it,” Miner has explained. The punk rock ethos extended to Toe Tag Riot, a darkly comedic series about a punk band cursed to become zombies who use their undead state to smash fascists — a tongue-in-cheek revenge fantasy that’s as hilarious as it is cathartic.

The Anthologist

Where Miner truly found his calling was in the world of anthologies. His editorial work on All We Ever Wanted: Stories of a Better World, co-edited with Eric Palicki and Tyler Chin-Tanner, helped create one of the most hopeful comics collections of the decade — 24 sci-fi stories presenting positive visions of the future. The Ringo Award-nominated anthology was highlighted by The New York Times as one of seven essential comics for the season.

But Miner’s most celebrated editorial achievement came with Young Men in Love, a queer romance anthology co-edited with Joe Glass. “I wanted to create the book that I wished I’d had when I was a young guy figuring things out and feeling very alone,” Miner told The Queer Review. The collection of 20 gay love stories — featuring work from Sina Grace, Chris Shehan, David Booher, and dozens of other queer creators — won both a GLAAD Media Award and a Gayming Award. “Every creator on this book, from the letterer and logo designers through every writer, artist, colorist, is a queer male or a non-binary person,” Miner emphasized, ensuring authentic representation at every level.

GWAR and Beyond

Miner’s range extends to the wonderfully absurd with GWAR: Orgasmageddon for Dynamite Comics, a collaboration with the legendary shock-rock band that proved he could bring the same punk energy to established properties. His work with A Wave Blue World extends beyond editing — he contributed to multiple anthologies and has helped shape the publisher’s identity as a home for diverse, socially conscious storytelling.

When not writing or editing comics, Miner can be found at goth clubs and punk shows, or working with Zion’s Mission to save animals in need. His unique combination of creative talent and real-world activism has made him one of indie comics’ most distinctive voices.
