Road of Bones (2019) transports readers to the Siberian Gulag of Kolyma in 1953 — hell on Earth — where a prisoner’s desperate escape leads him into a nightmare worse than the camp itself. The series earned Douek a Bram Stoker Award nomination, recognizing its unflinching exploration of human cruelty and survival.

The trilogy continued with Sea of Sorrows (2020), which moved the horror from frozen tundra to the depths of the ocean, and Breath of Shadows (2023), which followed a rock star’s heroin addiction cure into the jungles of South America — a “transgressive jungle nightmare” that pushed the series’ themes of addiction and inner demons to their logical extreme. Wailing Blade, his collaboration with artist Joe Mulvey at ComixTribe, demonstrated his range in the fantasy genre — a brutal, beautiful story that proved Douek could deliver character-driven narratives outside the horror space. His work on Drive Like Hell and Happy Hill further expanded his portfolio, showing a writer equally comfortable with crime, horror, and dark fantasy.
