Few comics can match the longevity, artistry, or sheer staying power of Usagi Yojimbo—and even fewer can claim a single creator who has written, drawn, and lettered every page for more than four decades. Perfect for fans of Lone Wolf and Cub, Groo the Wanderer, and the samurai cinema of Akira Kurosawa, Stan Sakai’s wandering swordsman is one of the most beloved characters in comics history.

Born in Kyoto, raised in Hawaii, and educated at the University of Hawaii and Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design, Sakai conjured Usagi in his sketchbook while planning an epic adventure story. The character—a masterless rabbit ronin in an anthropomorphic 17th-century Japan, loosely inspired by legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi and named after Kurosawa’s 1961 film Yojimbo—debuted in Albedo Anthropomorphics #2 in 1984 before landing in Fantagraphics’ Critters anthology and earning his own series in 1987. Meticulously researched and steeped in Japanese history, folklore, and yokai mythology, the series mixes samurai drama, earthy humor, and O. Henry-style twist endings.

Usagi’s journey across publishers is as storied as the ronin’s own wanderings: Fantagraphics to Mirage to Dark Horse, a full-color run at IDW, and—since 2022—a return to Dark Horse under Sakai’s own Dogu Publishing imprint. Crucially, Sakai has always owned the character outright, delivering finished work that publishers release without editorial input. That independence has kept the saga consistent for over 40 years, spanning 270+ issues under legacy numbering and 41 collected volumes.

The accolades are staggering: twelve Eisner Awards, including Best Serialized Story for the epic “Grasscutter”—presented by Will Eisner himself—and two for Best Lettering, plus Harvey Awards, an Inkpot Award, two National Cartoonists Society Silver Reubens, and induction into the Eisner Hall of Fame in 2021. Off the page, Usagi has guest-starred alongside the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in comics and cartoons—including the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Usagi Yojimbo: WhereWhen crossover—and spawned the Netflix animated series Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles.

Today Sakai’s Dogu imprint is expanding the Usagi universe with spinoffs like Chibi Usagi and Space Usagi: White Star Rising, and the first Usagi series not written by Sakai himself: Usagi Yojimbo: Kaitō ‘84, a five-issue heist thriller set in 1980s Osaka by Zack Rosenberg and Jared Cullum that Polygon calls a bold new direction for the franchise. Longtime colorists on the books include Emi Fujii, Tom Luth, Hi-Fi Colour Design, and Ronda Pattison.
