Barrier

A grizzled Texas rancher is driving a trailer full of stolen cattle across the border when he hits something in the road. A young undocumented migrant named Liddy is crossing the same desert, running from the men who killed her family. In a flash of light, they’re both gone — abducted by aliens, thrown into a cell together, and forced to understand each other or die.

Barrier is a five-issue digital comic by Brian K. Vaughan, artist Marcos Martin, and colorist Muntsa Vicente, published on their Panel Syndicate platform from 2015 to 2018. It’s the follow-up to the acclaimed The Private Eye, and it’s even more ambitious: a bilingual drama (English and Spanish) about violence, language, and the walls we build between each other.

Two Strangers, One Cell

The setup is pure sci-fi — an alien abduction — but the heart of Barrier is the relationship between its two protagonists, who can’t speak each other’s language and initially want nothing to do with each other. Vaughan’s script moves between the two perspectives, and Martin draws the desert, the ship, and the vast unknown with the kind of cinematic grandeur that made his work on Spider-Man and Doctor Strange legendary. The alien abductors are a grotesque, unknowable presence — rendered with a body-horror sensibility that makes the strangers-on-the-run story feel genuinely terrifying, while Vicente’s stark color work gives the alien ship and the Texas borderlands a haunting, painterly weight.

Barrier was a triumph for the Panel Syndicate experiment, and it won the 2018 Harvey Award for Best Digital Comic, cementing the platform’s place in comics history. It was released with bilingual editions and in multiple formats, all DRM-free and pay-what-you-want.
