Brian K. Vaughan writes the way the best storytellers always have: he makes you care so much you forget you’re reading. Born in Cleveland in 1976, Vaughan broke in at Marvel and DC in the late ’90s with acclaimed runs on Swamp Thing and Ultimate X-Men before going fully creator-owned. Y: The Last Man (with Pia Guerra) imagined the last man on Earth after every other male mammal dies — a sixty-issue masterpiece that won Eisners and was adapted into an FX on Hulu series. Ex Machina (with Tony Harris) fused superheroics with a mayoral political thriller. Pride of Baghdad (with Niko Henrichon) told the story of lions escaping a bombed Baghdad zoo and was hailed as an instant classic. Then came Saga, the series he says he conceived as a child and finally wrote when his wife was pregnant with their second child — and its 2012 debut made Publishers Weekly take notice, with Vaughan praising Staples’ gift for turning his “insane fever dreams into something you can emotionally connect with.”

Vaughan also spent the mid-2000s in the writer’s room of Lost, later running Stephen King’s Under the Dome for Showtime, but comics kept pulling him home. He launched Paper Girls (with Cliff Chiang), We Stand on Guard (with Steve Skroce), and the pay-what-you-want digital experiment The Private Eye with Marcos Martin and Muntsa Vicente on Panel Syndicate, followed by the bilingual sci-fi drama Barrier. In 2025 he reunited with Henrichon for the original graphic novel Spectators, which The Beat covered at NYCC — the same stage where he keeps teasing the second half of Saga’s planned 108 issues, with the next 54 “already plotted out.”

These days Vaughan keeps a famously low profile — he told The Beat he was never tempted by Twitter — and shares updates and behind-the-scenes work through his Substack, Exploding Giraffe.
