The Private Eye is a ten-issue digital comic by Brian K. Vaughan, artist Marcos Martin, and colorist Muntsa Vicente. Launched in 2013 on their own pay-what-you-want platform Panel Syndicate, it was a landmark experiment in creator-owned comics — DRM-free, name-your-price, and available in multiple languages, with the creators keeping 100% of the proceeds.
The Mystery of a Masked Future
The Private Eye is set in the aftermath of the “Cloud Burst,” a catastrophic data leak that ended the era of surveillance — and the era of the Internet as we know it. In its place: a culture of radical privacy, where revealing your real face to a stranger is an act of intimacy, and the profession of “paparazzo” is one of society’s greatest taboos. Patrick “P.I.” Immelmann is a young man who inherited his grandfather’s private detective agency, but spends his days photographing celebrities for a living — until a masked client hires him to find out who killed a woman no one can identify.
Vaughan and Martin built a world that’s part Philip K. Dick, part Raymond Chandler, and entirely its own thing — a visual feast of masked citizens, floating data-vaults, and retro-futuristic Los Angeles, all painted in Vicente’s bold, atmospheric color. The series was a critical sensation, hailed as a bold new model for digital comics, and its pay-what-you-want release proved that fans would happily support great comics without being forced. It’s the perfect companion to the team’s follow-up Barrier, and another essential entry in Vaughan’s creator-owned library.
