Cesar Madarro

Comic book artist with a retro underground style

📍 USA

Cesar Madarro brings a breath of fresh air—and decades of tradition—to the modern comics scene. His artwork channels the bold energy and visual exuberance of 1960s Underground comix, creating a style that feels both timeless and distinctly his own. While many contemporary artists aim for realism or manga-influenced aesthetics, Madarro’s work celebrates the exaggerated, over-the-top approach that defined earlier eras of comics.

His ongoing relationship with Big Bang Comics has allowed him to contribute to a publisher dedicated to honoring “when comics were fun.” Big Bang Comics creates faux comics history, paying homage to Golden and Silver Age creators while telling original stories. Madarro has illustrated multiple issues of their flagship title Big Bang Adventures, working with some of indie comics’ most respected writers.

On Big Bang Adventures #19 (2022), Madarro handled both art and covers, bringing his distinctive style to the ongoing adventures of Vinnie Fresco, a warrior from the planet Vakarra who fell in love with Earth’s artistic culture. The issue explored Vinnie encountering beings from beyond the stars, including the mysterious Juggler of Worlds warning about botanical invaders.

Big Bang Adventures #30 (2024) featured Madarro’s work on multiple stories, including a “New Vanguard” tale and “Dr. Weird’s Journals of Mystery.” He collaborated with writers including Gary S. Carlson, Dan Mishkin, John Rozum, Roger McKenzie, Mike Baron, and Lou Mougin—a virtual who’s who of indie comics talent.

His creator-owned work includes Loose Threads, a graphic novel written by Mark Poulton and published by Haunted Pizza LLC. The story follows comic book characters who break out into the real world after their series are canceled, searching for their creator. Successfully funded on Indiegogo with $16,335 raised from 219 backers, it showcases Madarro’s ability to bring humor and heart to unconventional premises.

In We Suck at Comics: Volume 2, Madarro illustrated “The Wastes of Chit-NuBrang” for writer Will Murray, a retro pulp science fiction story with 1930s styling and 1950s EC Comics sensibility.
