George O’Connor’s creative output would be impressive for any single person—for one who’s also a filmmaker, musician, and podcaster, it’s nothing short of extraordinary. Based in Boston, he’s built a career bringing high-concept genre stories to life through his publishing imprint Homeless Comics.
Vampires on Mars represents his most ambitious project to date—a sci-fi horror comedy about Hanna Von Fleischer, a 300-year-old vampire who has dreamed of going into space as long as she can remember. When billionaire Gary Laurie’s dream of conquering Mars is slipping away, Hanna offers a daring solution: turn astronauts into vampires to endure the perils of space travel. The resulting chaos—vampire astronauts, volatile crew members, and cosmic dangers—makes for thoroughly entertaining reading.
The series has become one of indie comics’ most successful Kickstarter projects. Issue #1 launched in April 2024, with combined issues #1-3 following in early 2025. By late 2025, the complete four-issue series was successfully funded with 247 backers raising nearly $8,000—making it “the most-backed single-issue comic” O’Connor has launched. The project features art by Fernando Pinto (TMNT, Hack/Slash), colors by Ellie Wright (Ringo Award winner), and letters by Justin Birch.
But comics are just one facet of O’Connor’s creative life. He’s deeply involved in Boston’s film community, having helped create over sixty short films. He’s the guitarist for heavy metal band Swarm of Eyes, bringing his musical sensibilities to the stage. And he co-created the podcast Phone Hugs & Therapy, serving as head writer.
His newsletter, “Figuring it Out on the Fly” (on Substack), explores the creative process with characteristic wit. The title reflects his philosophy: “no one really knows anything, and that’s okay.” He shares monthly insights about his creative journey, behind-the-scenes project updates, and occasional free songs for subscribers.
