Jeff Lemire grew up on a farm in Woodslee, Ontario, buying comics at the local convenience store — and went on to become one of the most influential voices in modern comics. His self-published debut Lost Dogs won the 2005 Xeric Grant, and his Essex County Trilogy became the first graphic novel to make the shortlist for CBC’s Canada Reads, cementing his reputation as the poet of rural Canadian life. He has since written and drawn the acclaimed Vertigo series Sweet Tooth, which became a hit Netflix series, and co-created the Black Hammer universe with Dean Ormston, winner of the 2017 Eisner Award for Best New Series.
Lemire has written extensively for both DC and Marvel — including celebrated runs on Animal Man, Green Arrow, Justice League Dark, Moon Knight, and Old Man Logan — while continuing to build one of the strongest creator-owned catalogs in comics: The Underwater Welder, Trillium, Descender with Dustin Nguyen, Gideon Falls with Andrea Sorrentino, and Phantom Road with Gabriel Hernández Walta, to name just a few. His collaborators read like a hall of fame: Dean Ormston, Dustin Nguyen, Andrea Sorrentino, Emi Lenox, and Scott Snyder, among many others.
In 2021, Lemire teamed with British artist Jock for the first time on Snow Angels, a 10-part survival saga that earned the 2022 Eisner Award for Best Digital Comic — his third Eisner win. A short story set in the same frozen world was released as an Amazon Original Story narrated by Jennifer Ikeda, expanding the universe beyond the comics page. In 2025 he published 10,000 Ink Stains, a memoir of his 25-year career.
