Steve Wands
Harvey Award-nominated comic book letterer whose credits span Batman, Gotham Academy, Attack on Titan, and the Eisner-winning Snow Angels — plus indie author and co-publisher of Dead Sky Publishing.
📍 New Jersey, USA
Steve Wands started his career in the trenches of comics production, working under Joe Kubert’s direction before landing an in-house lettering position at DC Comics in 2007. That “stepping stone,” as he called it, became one of the most durable and admired lettering careers in the industry. His DC work alone spans Batman, Detective Comics, Wonder Woman, Gotham Academy, The Multiversity, and the whimsical all-ages favorite The Secret Spiral of Swamp Kid — plus We Found a Monster, where his journal-style lettering became a character in the story.
Beyond DC, Wands has lettered across every corner of the industry: Attack on Titan for Kodansha, SFSX (Safe Sex) for Image, Not All Robots for AWA Studios, and major runs for TKO Studios and Dark Horse. His longtime collaboration with Jeff Lemire includes Sweet Tooth: The Return and Plutona, and his work with both Lemire and Jock on Snow Angels helped the series win the 2022 Eisner Award for Best Digital Comic. He is also a Harvey Award-nominated and Lambda Literary Award-nominated creator in his own right.
Wands is equally committed to the indie side of the industry as Co-Publisher and Chief Creative Officer of Dead Sky Publishing and its Death’s Head Press imprint, and as the founder of Lo-Fi Fonts, which supplies letterers with tools and community. He is also an author of the Stay Dead series, Feareater, and Trail of Blood.
Perfect for fans of Batman, Gotham Academy, and Sweet Tooth — and for anyone who wants to understand the invisible craft that makes great comics sing. Find his books and lettering at stevewands.com, and follow him on Twitter/X and Instagram.
