Jude Vigants
Freelance illustrator and comic artist creating visceral queer horror and heartfelt romance from the margins.
Jude Vigants is a freelance illustrator and comic book artist whose work lives at the intersection of queer identity, visceral horror, and tender romance. A graduate of New York’s School of Visual Arts, Vigants built their early reputation with the self-published comic Vampires Will Never Hurt You (2015), a short but potent queer horror story about a nonbinary teenager named Jamie and their friend Vicky on Halloween night. The Beat’s Heidi MacDonald called it “pretty nifty” and praised its promise, and the comic’s exploration of monsters, identity, and belonging would become a throughline in Vigants’ later work.
After relocating to Los Angeles, Vigants worked at the legendary Meltdown Comics in Hollywood, handling social media, signage, and on-the-floor sales while networking with the city’s indie comics community. It was during this period that they contributed art to The Mad Mind of Anton Sebaum, a project mentioned by ComicMix columnist Joe Corallo, who rode up to the Long Beach Comic Expo’s Creator Conference with Vigants and called the discovery “small world.”
Vigants’ breakout anthology work came with All We Ever Wanted: Stories of a Better World (A Wave Blue World, 2018), where they illustrated “Chat Room,” a story about an awkward girl finding solace with a friend she met online. The anthology, edited by Matt Miner, Eric Palicki, and Tyler Chin-Tanner, collected 24 hopeful sci-fi stories and was nominated for a Ringo Award for Best Anthology. Vigants also contributed a variant cover to Oni Press’s Rick and Morty series, showcasing their range from indie horror to mainstream licensed work. Their cover illustrations for Oni Press and Adult Swim projects further cemented their reputation as a versatile commercial artist.
In 2022, Vigants illustrated “Catch Me”—a story by Nico Vasilo about a romantic meeting between two men, one of whom has a prosthetic leg—for Young Men in Love, the GLAAD Media Award-winning anthology from A Wave Blue World. The collection, which celebrated love between men through genres spanning fantasy, horror, and slice-of-life, featured Vigants alongside creators like Al Ewing, Sina Grace, and Nick Robles. The Queer Comics Database catalogued the work as part of its definitive record of LGBTQ comics.
Vigants’ work has been spotlighted in the context of queer horror’s growing presence at Flame Con, the world’s largest LGBTQ comic con. The Beat’s 2019 coverage of the convention highlighted Vampires Will Never Hurt You as evidence of the genre’s power to subvert victimhood narratives—queer characters as monsters who fight back, not just suffer.
