Hayden Sherman

Award-winning comic artist known for dynamic, genre-spanning work on Wasted Space, Absolute Wonder Woman, and Batman: Dark Patterns.

Hayden Sherman has been drawing spaceships and cowboys for a living since breaking into comics in the mid-2010s, and the range of their portfolio is staggering. From the grimy, post-apocalyptic wasteland of The Few to the cosmic irreverence of Wasted Space with writer Michael Moreci at Vault Comics, Sherman’s art has a kinetic energy that feels perfectly suited to stories about broken worlds and the people trying to survive them.

Their breakthrough came with a string of creator-owned and indie projects that showcased a willingness to go fully hands-on — penciling, inking, coloring, and even lettering series like Cold War for AfterShock Comics and Thumbs for Image Comics. That total creative control gave Sherman a distinctive voice: gritty linework, expressive character acting, and a knack for making both intimate character moments and explosive action sequences feel equally vital.

The indie success led to bigger stages. Sherman joined the Dark Spaces anthology at IDW with co-creator Scott Snyder, first on the wildfire-set Wildfire and later on the deeply unsettling Dungeon. They brought their talents to Marvel with work on Predator vs. Wolverine and Old Man Logan, then made the jump to DC with Detective Comics, Batman: Urban Legends, and Knight Terrors: Harley Quinn.

But it’s their work on DC’s Absolute Universe that has cemented Sherman as a defining artist of this era. Teaming with writer Kelly Thompson on Absolute Wonder Woman, Sherman designed a radically reimagined Diana — tattooed, battle-scarred, riding a skeletal Pegasus through a hellish landscape that blends Greek mythology with apocalyptic horror. The series has been widely praised for its visual ambition, with SKTCHD dedicating a full feature to Sherman’s design process. They followed that with Batman: Dark Patterns, a 12-issue run that Bleeding Cool noted as proof of Sherman’s growing stature at DC.

A lover of science fiction and fantasy who’s grateful to be drawing for a living, Sherman uses they/them pronouns and has built a career on versatility — equally comfortable rendering cosmic absurdity, supernatural westerns like Above Snakes, or the darkly comedic Chicken Devil.
