Michael Moreci

Chicago-based comic book writer and novelist behind critically acclaimed series like Roche Limit, Wasted Space, and Barbaric.

📍 Chicago, IL

Michael Moreci has built a reputation as one of indie comics’ most versatile storytellers, moving fluidly between hard sci-fi, visceral horror, and pulpy fantasy with a voice that’s equal parts cerebral and unapologetically fun. Based in Chicago, Moreci has become a fixture in the indie comics scene, earning recognition from Newcity Lit’s “Lit 50” and building a body of work that spans some of the most compelling creator-owned series of the last decade.

Moreci first broke through with Roche Limit, a critically acclaimed sci-fi trilogy published by Image Comics that explored themes of colonization, identity, and survival on a remote space station. The series established Moreci as a writer unafraid to tackle big ideas while keeping the narrative grounded in character-driven drama. He followed this with Hoax Hunters, a series about a reality TV crew that investigates paranormal phenomena—part satire, part supernatural thriller.

His collaboration with artist Hayden Sherman on Wasted Space for Vault Comics became a standout in the sci-fi comics landscape. The series, which follows a reluctant soldier caught in an intergalactic war, was praised for its sharp dialogue, dark humor, and emotional depth. The Kickstarter campaign for the Wasted Space Omnibus fully funded in under a week, a testament to the passionate fanbase Moreci has cultivated.

Moreci’s range extends well beyond original creator-owned work. He’s written for major franchises including Suicide Squad for DC Comics, Planet of the Apes for Boom! Studios, and Dick Tracy and Flash Gordon Quarterly for Mad Cave Studios. His series Barbaric—a darkly comedic fantasy about a barbarian and an axe that gets drunk on the blood of the immoral—became a smash hit for Vault Comics, showcasing his ability to blend genre conventions with subversive humor.

Beyond comics, Moreci is an accomplished novelist. His debut novel Black Star Renegades (Tor/Forge) is a space opera that pays homage to classic sci-fi while carving out its own identity. He followed it with Spy Swap, an espionage thriller that further demonstrated his versatility across genres. His award-winning debut feature film, Revealer, premiered on the festival circuit to critical acclaim.

Moreci also contributes to the next generation of creators as a lecturer at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and as a senior writer at Northwestern University. He lives in Chicago with his wife, two sons, and dog.

Perfect for fans of Rick Remender’s cosmic sci-fi, Jeff Lemire’s character-driven narratives, and the irreverent humor of The Nice House on the Lake.
