A decade has passed since the first Waves hit, unleashing humanity’s darkest impulses and plunging the world into chaos. That’s the premise of Resonant, Vault Comics’ critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic horror series that explores what happens when our worst impulses become tangible forces of destruction.
Written by David Andry and originally illustrated by Alejandro Aragon (with Skylar Patridge taking over for later arcs), Resonant follows Paxton, a single father of three, who must venture from the secluded haven they’ve built to restock the medicine his chronically-ill youngest son needs to survive. When the routine supply run goes wrong, Paxton and his children—now separated—must battle through a landscape where humanity’s darkest desires have taken physical form.
The Waves of Resonant are based on the concept of the Call of the Void—that unsettling pull we sometimes feel toward dangerous outcomes. But in this world, those passing dark thoughts become literal manifestations, creatures that embody humanity’s worst impulses. The horror isn’t monsters from outside; it’s the darkness within, made manifest.
Jason Wordie’s earthy colors perfectly capture the desolate landscape, while Deron Bennett’s lettering brings each character’s emotions to the surface, making the reader feel every moment of fear and desperation. The series drew comparisons to The Walking Dead, The Road, Bird Box, and Y: The Last Man—stories that explore how ordinary people react to extraordinary catastrophe.
Resonant debuted to universal acclaim, with multiple sell-outs at the retail level. The series ran from 2019 to 2021, collected in two volumes and later as a complete trade paperback. It’s a terrifying, thought-provoking read that uses horror as a lens to examine what we’re capable of when the rules of society break down.
Perfect for fans of post-apocalyptic fiction, psychological horror, and comics that use genre conventions to explore deeper themes about human nature.
