The Wilson family packs up for a cross-country road trip—windows down, radio up, the promise of a fresh start ahead. But when they veer off the interstate and into the bone-dry expanse of Joshua Tree National Park, their journey takes a harrowing turn. Inside an abandoned camping trailer, half-swallowed by the desert sand, something ancient and hungry is waiting. And it finds Helene, the matriarch of the family.
What follows is a slow-burn descent into psychological terror as a malevolent supernatural force takes root in Helene’s mind, fracturing her consciousness and turning the woman they love into something unrecognizable. The desert doesn’t just isolate them—it imprisons them with a threat wearing their mother’s face.
Writers David Andry and Tim Daniel (creators of The Plot, Wasting, Resonant) weave a taut, character-driven horror story that draws power from what it means to watch someone you love slip away. Paired with the moody, expressive art of Chris Shehan (The Autumnal, House of Slaughter) and the atmospheric colors of Jason Wordie (Wasted Space, Barbaric), Denizen uses the stark beauty of the Mojave Desert as both setting and metaphor—a vast, beautiful, and utterly indifferent landscape where a family’s bond is tested to its breaking point.
Originally serialized across 4 chapters as part of Vault Comics’ Nightfall: Double Feature line, the complete series was collected in a single 144-page volume on June 25, 2024.
Perfect for fans of The Autumnal, Something is Killing the Children, and The Haunting of Hill House—where the real horror isn’t the monster, but what it does to the people you love.
