David M. Booher

GLAAD-nominated writer behind Killer Queens and Canto, developing Firefly comics for Boom! Studios.

David M. Booher writes comics featuring LGBTQ characters front and center—because diverse stories deserve mainstream platforms. A lawyer by training, he made the leap from legal briefs to beloved characters, bringing his analytical mind and narrative instincts to the comics industry. Based in Los Angeles, he lives with his husband and their adopted greyhounds.

His breakout work, Killer Queens for Dark Horse Comics, was featured in the New York Times as a must-read in honor of Pride Month. The series—featuring reformed intergalactic assassins Max and Alex—earned GLAAD Media Award nominations for its joyful, unapologetically queer take on sci-fi action. Paired with artist Claudia Balboni and colorist Harry Saxon, Booher created a love letter to 1950s sci-fi nostalgia with a modern progressive edge.

His subsequent creator-owned series, Canto, is an all-ages fantasy about a tiny knight on a big quest. Published by IDW, the series has been optioned by Westbrook Studios (Will Smith’s production company) for development as a feature film. The combination of swashbuckling adventure and emotional storytelling has earned critical praise and a devoted readership.

Currently, Booher is writing ALL-NEW FIREFLY for Boom! Studios, bringing his character-driven approach to the beloved sci-fi franchise. His recent work includes Ghostbusters: Back in Town for Dark Horse Comics (2024), a series set between Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire that explores the next generation of ghost-catching heroes. He also launched the horror-comedy series Specs with artist Chris Shehan, and his latest creator-owned project Malloch the Damned—a Kickstarter-funded series following a queer demon banished from Hell—releases in 2025.

His work spans genres—from space opera to fantasy to horror-comedy—but always centers on compelling characters finding their place in the universe. A vocal advocate for LGBTQ representation in comics, Booher regularly speaks at conventions about storytelling, representation, and the intersection of creativity and identity.

Perfect for fans of action-packed sci-fi with heart, LGBTQ-led storytelling, and writers who balance humor with genuine emotional stakes.
